First Days

I am very lucky to have started a new internship at a wonderful architecture firm. Natalye Appel + Architecture is a small firm here in Houston where I will be interning for the rest of the school year. I became interested in architecture this summer after playing my favorite childhood video game, Minecraft (Yes, I am serious), and contacted Natalye to see if I could help her out as an intern and see what working in an architecture firm is actually like. As it turns out, she needed some help with their social media and online presence, and being the "tech-savvy" teen that I am, I was more than happy to help.

My first day was more relaxed and about getting to know the office space and where things are, as well as having a meeting about the firm's social media presence, and what I noticed about it. I got to see the biggest printer I think I have ever seen in my life, and so many drafts of architectural drawings that it was mind-boggling.

One thing that I love about the internship so far is the actual office-space. The office is in a small house that has been renovated and changed for the firm. As you walk in, there are the bones of a wall separating the space in two, with doorways throughout. The ceiling is exposed beams and you can see the ductwork and even some of the bones of the lighting. There are a lot of windows around the space, letting in natural light, with shades and bamboo stalks to make sure there's no glare. I absolutely love the bamboo outside, as it moves in the wind and helps create a more peaceful atmosphere.

My second week here has been a little more quiet focusing on creating Instagram posts to be posted online later. I sorted through an amazing amount of photos of past projects, and chose ones that I thought could be used in good Instagram posts. My favorite photos were the old ones of the people who work here, as there were some cute ones from the 80's and 90's that were so retro. So far I think I'm enjoying my time here.
